COMPANY BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW OF KALMATRON®Page 4 PROTECTIVE BARRIERKalmatron® is used as a Protective Barrier for the Restoration of Old Concrete Structures. Structure regeneration is a new science that is emerging at the interface of physics and chemistry. The achievement of this formulation is a simple sequence of reactions of cement stone phase shift: Penetrating the old concrete between 50mm and 150mm, Dissolving all that can be dissolved, spreading out within the concrete voids and Hardening as One Solid. This is an almost perfect description of the process of Adhesion. The inert material works like a live organism: cracks are healed; old concrete acquires new properties and can be used as new; and, complete regeneration has taken place. KALMATRON® PROTECTS AGAINST:
APPLICATIONIn practice, the existing surface is sandblasted to remove old paint and other materials. When applying Kalmatron®, no sandblasting is necessary on concrete surfaces where no paint has been applied and where the surface is not covered with smoke, soot or other pollutants. This is extremely beneficial to contractors who normally have to do heavy sandblasting in every case prior to applying polymer protective coatings on the market today (which at best only last a few years). Pure Kalmatron®, as supplied by the factory, is mixed in correct proportion with water and applied to a thickness of 3mm - 5mm on all surfaces in need of repair. As pointed out previously, a complex and almost biological process of regeneration begins to take place. Self-healing of the old concrete begins, owing to the penetration of microscopic voids. New crystalline formations emerge on the walls of the voids, cavities and capillaries. Impermeability to liquids (even after damage to the 3mm - 5mm protective layer) is achieved as a result of pore filling. The Structural Deterioration of the concrete, if not too far advanced, is halted. It is now recognized that pores can be filled in the most efficient manner through chemical reactions of a protective composition which is compatible with concrete. Herein lies the key to Kalmatron's® reaction with cement and concrete. New structures are formed within concrete. The amorphous and crystalline matrix of concrete is penetrated by the protective composition and becomes very similar to the original crystalline structure. Again, even in old concrete, resistance to corrosion of the reinforcement rebar increases due to the formation of a thin oxide film from the Kalmatron® solution. Deep molecular and ion penetration takes place. For concrete with a density of up to 2200kg/m³, the penetration depth is at least 15mm, and it ranges from 5 to 28mm for concrete with a density of up to 2400kg/m³.
